West Borough Baptist Church

I’t sure that you all have heard of the WBC. If not here is a video. This is only one of the parts of the documentary, but I warn it is difficult to stomach. I want to know what everyone thinks of these people? I can guess what most people will says: they are insane, they are dangerous, they shouldn’t be allowed to do that, etc. I want to get you thinking about something else, are the living up to Old Testament code? Their most prominent message is that God hates the USA because we have homosexuals in our society. According to Leviticus 20:13 “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.”

*Disclaimer* In no way am I endorsing what these people are doing. In no way am I saying that what they are doing is right, it surely is not.

That being said, they are trying to live up to the Bible to a ‘t’. They do not realize that the Bible (specifically the Old Testament) is 2,000 years old. It is a collections of poems and stories to describe the way people lived in ancient society. Society has evolved, and the people who live in this society have evolved. These people are turning to things that ancient society did not do well. We would not use ancient medicine to cure the flu, cancer, AIDS, HIV, or any other disease. They are turning to ancient remedies that just do not work. ]
I believe that most people, religious or not, would agree that these people are preaching something that is not compatible with our society.

  1. Great post. Have you read “A Year of Living Biblically”? It’s a very funny look at how Bible rules (specifically Old Testament) are so random and numerous that you would drive yourself crazy trying to follow all of them. The book also speaks to different interpretations of that specific Leviticus passage. For instance, some who read it in context say that the abomination is not just the men having sex with men, but also the men having sex with women to whom they are unattached. They claim that the passage could be a comment on promiscuity rather than homosexuality. Personally I believe it’s all a load of shit so I don’t really care how you interpret it.

However, to answer whether or not WBS are following the Old Testament code, we would also have to ask them if they are murdering their neighbors for working on a Sunday, or wearing clothing of mixed fiber, or cutting the hair on the sides of their heads, or stoning adulterers in the square (though I wouldn’t put it past WBC to partake in that) or if they are following the hundreds of other obscure Old Testament rules.

As I say though, whether or not they are following the Bible doesn’t matter since it is a load of bullox anyway, I would say WBC are just a bunch of crazy assholes like the rest of the crazy assholes who hide behind religion and use it as a reason to be assholes.

If you’re a fellow atheist you may enjoy my blog from today : https://thestockandpillory.wordpress.com/2013/04/11/the-ultimate-pyramid-scheme-catholicism/

Love the Carlin quote too. One of my favourites.

    • I am an Atheist 🙂 thanks for the comment! I will certainly check out your blog. I am working on a new page called “Bible Quotes You Won’t Hear in School”. I’ve read the Bible cover to cover and now I’m compiling a list of all the horrible things done for God and all the rules that God puts in place. Leviticus has so many obscure rules for things like animal sacrifice and in numbers God just gets even weirder and even more in depth in his animal sacrifice.
      Leviticus 1:5 is nice
      Leviticus 4:4, 6
Leviticus 14:49-53 God’s cure for leprosy.
      Lol all incredibly messed up.

  2. If Christianity didn’t evolve with modern times, if they didn’t cherry pick from their holy book, if they instead–as you say–tried to live up to the Bible to a ‘t’, then West Borough Baptist would have been the norm. That’s the state of Islam in a sense.

But that is not sustainable, to survive they needed to evolve, and now the moderates are the norm. It’s ironic that the moderates condemn the extremists, who are, in fact, better practitioners of the faith.
